Ten strong fools had lost their way
They could not get back home
They came upon a monkey puzzle tree
With a fairy spirit there
"I see you looking lost and lorn
Out here all on your own
If one of you will die for me
I'll lead the others home"
The ten men talked among themselves
The offer seemed too bad
Could they find even one of them
They could afford to lose?
"Oh we are tight, and to the man
We each love every one
For we have been through thick and thin
Through fire and through cold"
And so they chose, if they should die
It would be all of them
Their fates were one and all the same
No one was left behind.
"Instead of that, I'll give you this:
Look for a fox of red
It will lead somewhere interesting
If you go where you're led"
Ten strong fools had lost their way
They could not get back home
And so they left the Monkey Puzzle tree
To wander who knows where
