Young Wander was sobbing
Beneath a willow tree
The Fairy looked down at her from a branch
Sally came upon them
And sat beside the girl
And there they sat in silence for a while
The tears will flow on
Carrying salt to the sea
One drop at a time
The day was like a dream
Warm air, soft light, cool breeze
The stirring leaves made soft her heavy cries
Sally said, "I am here"
Wander said "So am I"
And for a while that was all they said
The tears will flow on
Carrying salt to the sea
One drop at a time
Wander said, "there were days
When I wished he was dead,
I'm not sure there were days when I did not.
But now that he is dead,
And my wish is come true
I'm mourning for the man I hated most."
The tears will flow on
Carrying salt to the sea
One drop at a time
Sally passed a canteen
Wander drank a little
And spilled a bit of it as her hands shook
Birds sang in the distance
Sparrow, nuthatch, towhee
They sang sweet songs of "get away from me"
The tears will flow on
Carrying salt to the sea
One drop at a time
Sally said, "neither thought
Is wrong, and you can feel
Both or neither, good and bad all at once.
You have lost someone close
One who treated you bad
But still someone who was close to you."
The tears will flow on
Carrying salt to the sea
One drop at a time
Wander said, "who are you
To tell me how to feel?
What do you know, to speak as if you know?"
She ran off, who knows where
Falling tears marked her path
And from each drop, a tiny flower grew
The tears will flow on
Carrying salt to the sea
One drop at a time
Sally sat, and she thought
Of the words she had said
Had they been too much, had they been unkind?
She spoke from her own heart
She spoke her own truth
But it was not right for how Young Wander felt
The tears will flow on
Carrying salt to the sea
One drop at a time
